TrimTab Brewing was created in 2014 in Birmingham, Alabama by the husband and wife duo, Harris and Cheri Stewart. Harris, originally from Asheville, North Carolina, was at the time a law student at the University of Alabama who had a passion for homebrewing. In 2009, local businessman George Barber offered to give away a small vacant lot to a business with a good pitch, and after three years he still hadn’t found a qualified taker. In 2012, the Stewarts finally won the contest. However, the site proved to be impractical for building a brewery, and the costs and regulations would have made it difficult for the Stewarts. Nevertheless, they coordinated with Barber to build the brewery on a more suitable location nearby. Their brewery now sits in the former Barber Motorsports Museum, and in 2020 they expanded into the adjoining space that used to be Motus Motorcycles.

The name “TrimTab” comes from the small part of a rudder that helps steer a ship. The brewery was inspired by the Buckminster Fuller epitaph, “Call me Trimtab,” referring to the ability of a single person to help cascade bigger actions amongst a greater group. The brewery also produces some of their beers under contract at Abita Brewing’s facilities in Abita Springs, Louisiana.
