Tsingtao Brewery was founded in Qingdao, located in the Shandong province of China, in 1903 by the Anglo-German Brewery Company, originally under the name of Germania-Brauerei Tsingtao Co. It came under Japanese military control following the Siege of Tsingtao during World War I, and was sold to Dai-Nippon Brewery (owners, at the time, of Asahi and Sapporo). In 1945, as the Japanese retreated from China, the brewery was given to the Tsui family, with supervision by the Nationalist government. However, when the Communist party took over in 1949, the brewery was nationalized, and remained under government control until 1993, when it became the first Chinese organization listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Minority stakes in Tsingtao have been held by Anheuser-Busch, at one point up to 27%, as well as Asahi, which held nearly 20%. Asahi sold its stake in 2017 for nearly $1.1 billion.
