Upland Brewing Company was founded in 1997 in Bloomington, Indiana by Marc Sattinger, Russ Levitt and Dean LaPlante. The name of the brewery was inspired by the rolling hills of the local area. They opened the brewpub the following year, and soon began distributing their beer throughout the area. It had grown to statewide distribution by 2004, and in 2006 Sattinger retired. Upland was then purchased by Doug Dayhoff and a group of investors.

The brewery began to expand rapidly. In 2009, they opened a second brewpub in Indianapolis. Another brewing facility was opened in Bloomington in 2012, and the first brewery was transitioned into a research and development facility. That same year, Upland purchased the rights to Terrehaute Brewing’s Champagne Velvet, and began selling it under their name. They added another tap house in Carmel, Indiana in 2013, and a restaurant in Columbus, Indiana in 2016.

In 2017, Dayhoff sold his stake in the business to the rest of the investors, and left his role as president of the brewery. The group of investors now include Adam Estes, Ryan Moravec, Edward DeSalle, and Padraig Cullen. The company is now distributed nationally, and has 11 total locations throughout Indiana.
