Ursus was founded in Cluj-Napoca, Romania in 1878. In 1997, South African Breweries purchased the company, and it became part of SABMiller when the parent company purchased Miller and renamed itself in 2002. In 2016, SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, but due to antitrust regulations was forced to sell its Eastern European assets to Asahi.
