Weihenstephaner is the beer brand of Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, often called the oldest brewery in the world. Written records go back as far as 1675, though the brewery claims 1040 as its founding date and may even go back as early as 768. Originally founded by the Weihenstephan abbey in Weihenstephan, Germany, in 1803 the abbey was dissolved and the brewing operations secularized. The state of Bavaria took control, which it retains to this day – making Weihenstephaner a state-owned enterprise.
