Widmer Brothers Brewing, commonly known as Widmer, is a well-known beer brand based in Portland, Oregon. The company was founded in 1984 by brothers Kurt and Rob Widmer. The brewery quickly gained a reputation for their Hefeweizen, which is still one of the most popular in the United States. Widmer had a close relationship with Redhook brewery, who brewed their beer for distribution on the East Coast. In 2008, Widmer and Redhook solidified this relationship by merging into a new entity known as Craft Brew Alliance (CBA). Redhook had gone public in 1995, and the merged company traded under their symbol HOOK (and later, BREW).
In 2010, Anheuser-Busch InBev purchased a 32.2% stake in CBA. The agreement included a “play or pay” clause that required Anheuser-Busch to pay $20 million if they didn’t purchase the rest of the company by 2019 for $24.50 per share. In 2019, they paid that fee, causing the stock price to drop more than 20%. Six weeks later, they purchased the rest of CBA at $16.50 a share, making Widmer a wholy-owned subsidiary. By that time, Craft Brew Alliance was the twelfth biggest beer company in the United States.
In 2023, in an effort to focus their craft holdings, AB InBev sold the Widmer brand, along with seven other brands in their portfolio, to Tilray Brands for a total of $83.4 million.
