Hofbrauhaus Wolters was founded in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony (now Germany) in 1627 by Zacharias Boiling. It was taken over by Peter Warnecke upon Boiling’s death, and later passed on to Warnecke’s son. When Heinrich Levin Wolters married into the family and took over the brewery in 1734, he renamed the company after himself. The brewery remained family owned until 1920, when it merged with Balhornsche Bierbrauerei AG to become Hofbrauhaus Wolters and Balhorn AG. In 1985, that company was taken over by the Gilde Brewery, which acquired an 83% stake in it. When Gilde was purchased by Interbrew in 2003, they increased the acquisition of Wolters to 90%. When Interbrew merged with AmBev the following year and became InBev, the decision was made to dissolve Wolters, which was met with a large public outcry. Eventually in 2006, a group of investors led by Thomas Renneke, Wilhelm Koch, Hans-Peter Lehna and Hanns-Bernd de Wall purchased the company for €7 million. The new company is now named Hofbrauhaus Wolters GmbH. In 2020, the German bank Volksbank BRAWO eG purchased 100% of the shares of the company.
