Sapporo Sells Anchor Brewing to Chobani Founder
May 31, 2024 – After months of speculation on who would snatch up the beloved San Francisco beer brand, Anchor Brewing finally has a new owner.
Hamdi Ulukaya, the billionaire founder behind yogurt brand Chobani, won the bid from Sapporo, which includes the brand’s IP, equipment, and its 2.1 acre property in the Potrero Hill neighborhood. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The deal was announced by the San Francisco Chronicle, which spoke with Ulukaya Thursday night. Sapporo has not yet commented publicly on the sale. Ulukaya commented that he “didn’t know Anchor existed” until August of last year, when he heard about the closure in an article on Forbes.
He also commented that he hopes to hire back the old employees of the company, but he doesn’t know if that would include the union that formerly represented the labor at the brewery.
