What does DE HALVE MAAN Own?
De Halve Maan was founded in Bruges, Belgium in 1856 by Henri Maes and Canon Petrus-Johannes Maes, though a brewery had been present on the site for centuries prior. The brewery was run by descendants of Henri Maes until 1988, when its assets were sold to Brouwerij Riva. The family held onto the name, however, and in 2005 Henri Maes’ great-great-great-grandson Xavier Vanneste restarted the brewery. In 2008, he repurchased the Straffe Hendrick brand from Duvel Moortgat and began brewing it in Bruges again.
