What does ALEX LEE Own?
Alex Lee is a holding company based in Hickory, North Carolina and founded in 1931 by Moses George and his sons Alex and Lee George. That year, the three men purchased the Merchants Produce store in Shelby, North Carolina and converted it to the emerging grocery store style. In 1956, after the sons took over the company, the name was changed to Merchants Distributors Inc.
In 1984, MDI purchased competitor Lowes Foods. With the acquisition, the company reorganized as a holding company, and in 1992 became known as Alex Lee.
In 2014, Lowes opened the first growler filling station for beer in one of its Lowes stores, a concept which soon expanded to brewpubs throughout their locations known as The Beer Den.
