Affligem beer dates back to 1129, when the first recorded mention of brewing at the Affligem Abbey is recorded. The brewery stopped in 1796 when the French Revolution resulted in the seizing of the abbey property. But by 1887 the abbey had been restored and the brewery began again. The brewery again closed when the Nazis took over in 1940. In 1956, the abbey began working with de Smedt brewery to license the Affligem name for their beer. In 2000, Heineken purchased de Smedt.
