Estrella Jalisco was firsted created by Cervecería Estrella in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 1890 by Juan E. Ohrner. The Austrian founder was originally named Johann Ohrner before moving to Mexico during the “Porfiriato,” the era of dictatorial rule in the country by president Porfirio Diaz. The brewery shut down shortly after its founding, but was revived in 1910, which is the date currently used as its founding by its present-day owner, Anheuser-Busch InBev.

In 1954, Estrella Jalisco was purchased by Mexico’s biggest brewery, Grupo Modelo. 10 years later, the brewery was renamed Cervecería Modelo de Guadalajara, and the focus began to shift towards the company’s main beverages, Modelo and Corona.

In 2013, Grupo Modelo was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, a Belgian-Brazilian multinational beverage and brewing company. Because Anheuser Busch had such a prevailing presence in the United States, the rights to sell most of Modelo’s products in the country were sold to Constellation Brands to avoid scrutiny from the US Justice Department. However, since Estrella Jalisco was not yet available for purchase outside of Mexico, the global rights to sell the beer were retained by AB InBev.

In 2016, eager to counter the rising popularity in the United States of the Mexican brands they sold to Constellation Brands, AB InBev began importing Estrella Jalisco to the United States. The brand launched with major sports sponsorships, including with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a multi-million dollar ad campaign which used the slogan, “This is Mexicanidad.” Many of the brand’s michelada offshoots, however, are made in the United States at the company’s main brewing facilities.
