The Independence beer brand was created in 2004 in Austin, Texas by Amy and Rob Cartwright. In 2016, they sold a majority stake to Lagunitas Brewing, which at the time was 50% owned by Heineken. The following year, Heineken purchased the remainder of Lagunitas.
