McEwan’s Beer was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1856 by William McEwan, and was originally known as the Fountain Brewery. In 1931, it merged with Younger’s beer to become Scottish Brewers. In 1960, that company marged with Newcastle Brewery to become Scottish and Newcastle. In 2008, rivals Heineken and Carlsberg teamed up to purchase Scottish and Newcastle, and divvy up the assets. McEwan’s originally went to Heineken, but they sold the brand just three years later to Wells & Young’s. The brand did eventually end up in Carlsberg’s hands, however, when Wells & Young’s sold their brewing operations to Carlsberg subsidiary Marston’s in 2017.
