Rainier beer was created in the year 1878 in the city of Seattle, Washington by the Seattle Brewery, founded by A.B. Rabbeson. The brand was sold to the Bay View Brewing Company in 1888, which became the Seattle Brewing & Malting Company in 1893 when it merged with the Claussen & Sweeney brewery. In 1935, the brand was purchased by Canadians Fritz and Emil Sick, who eventually renamed the brewery the Sicks’ Rainier Brewing Company. In 1977, G. Heileman Brewing Company purchased the company, who held it until 1996, when they were purchased by Stroh’s. Burdened by debt from the deal, Stroh’s collapsed, and sold many of its brands in the United States to Pabst, including Rainier. Its Canadian rights were sold to Sleeman Breweries, which in 2006 was purchased by Sapporo.
