Sibebe beer was first created in 1969 by eSwatini Breweries, established by South African Breweries in Matsapha, Eswatini (then known as Swaziland). The company was originally known as Swaziland Breweries, and althought it originally was 100% owned by South African Breweries, 40% of the business was purchased by the Swaziland Ministry of Industry and Trade and the sovereign wealth fund Tibiyo Taka Ngwane in 1981.

In 1995, Swaziland Breweries merged with Ngwana Breweries and Swaziland Bottlers to become Swaziland Beverages Limited. In 2002, its owner South African Breweries purchased American brewer Miller from Philip Morris for $5.6 billion, and became SABMiller. The following year, SBL renamed itself to eSwatini Beverages Limited, to reflect the name most commonly used by the Swazi people for the nation, a move that was followed by the official government in 2018.

By 2016, SABMiller was the second largest brewery in the world, but that year it was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the only other brewery that was larger. The move also made them the largest brewers in Africa, a title that SABMiller had previously held, and putting them ahead of the French wine and beer group Groupe Castel, which also owns several subsidiaries throughout the continent.

Sibebe takes its name from Sibebe mountain, a granite peak located 10 kilometers from the capital city of Mbabane which has become one of the symbols of the nation. The beer is labeled as a “premium lager,” and is a pale lager similar to a pilsner. As eSwatini Breweries’ flagship beer, it is one of the most produced beers by the company, which has an 87% market share in the small enclave nation. In 2013, when the company’s breweries were retooled, the entire nation experienced a beer shortage.
