Sol beer is a brand that was created in the city of Mexico City, Mexico in 1899, by a small brewery known as El Salto del Agua (“The waterfall” in Spanish). The name came from a ray of sunlight that the brewer observed hitting the kettle during a brew, and so he named the beer “El Sol.” In 1912, El Salto del Agua was purchased by Cervecería Moctezuma, and twelve years later the adjusted the branding to call the beer Cerveza Sol.
In 1985, Cervecería Moctezuma merged with Cervecería Cuauhtémoc to become Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma. During that era, the company began ramping up exports of the beer, particularly to the United Kingdom and Germany, and marketing it to soccer fans and young professionals. The beer was sold in a clear bottle, with the slogan, “Be clear.”
The company released a reformulated version of the beer, which they called “Sol 2,” in 2007. It was based off of feedback that the company had reached out to consumers for in their new product development. The beer was not a commercial success, and was discontinued shortly thereafter.
In 2010, Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Brewery became a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., a Dutch multinational brewing company, in a deal that was valued at $5.5 billion. Inside the united states, the beer is marketed and distributed by Molson Coors, who signed a 10 year rights agreement with Heineken in 2017. That deal allows Heineken to grow Sol’s global reputation with a presence in the United States, while focusing on their other, more established Mexican imports in the United States, including Dos Equis and Tecate.
