Zlatý Bažant was first brewed in 1969 in Hurbanavo, Slovakia by the Hurbanavo Brewery. Its name means Golden Pheasant, after all of the pheasants that populate in the area around Hurbanavo, and it is sold under that name in the United States and Canada. In 1995, Hurbanavo brewery was purchased by Heineken.
