Żywiec Brewery was founded in 1856 in the town of Żywiec, Poland (then Austria). It was founded by the Duke of Cieszyn, then the son of Archduke Charles Ludwik Habsburg. It remained in the possession of the Habsburg Archduchy until 1939, when the Nazis invaded Poland and seized the brewery, renaming it Beskidenbrauerei Saybusch. When the Soviet Army took over control of the area in 1944, it became owned by the State Treasury of the USSR. It remained state owned until 1991, when it was converted into a joint stock company. By 1992 over 70% of the shares were sold on the open market, and by 1994 Heineken controlled a majority of the business. It is now 99% owned by Heineken.
