Moonlight Brewing was founded in Santa Rosa, California in 1992 by Brian Hunt. In 2016, looking to step away from day-to-day duties, Hunt sold a 50% stake in the business to Lagunitas Brewing Company, which at the time was itself 50% owned by Heineken International. The following year, however, Heineken took over complete control of Lagunitas, and Hunt felt that the nature of the agreement had shifted. He quietly began looking for new partners, and in 2022 an agreement was reached for Heineken’s share to be sold to Patrick Rue, founder and former owner of the Orange County based Bruery. The pair now own the brewery together.
