Amstel is a well-known beer brand that was created in 1872 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The beer was named after the Amstel River, which runs through the city. It was one of the earliest lager breweries in Amsterdam, and used that novelty to ride a wave of success in the city, and later the country at large.

The original brewery was established by Charles Antoine de Pesters, Johannes Hendrikus van Marwijk Kooy, and Willem Eduard Uhlenbroek. de Pesters was married to Johannes’ sister, and the two became good friends before starting the brewery. They gave their brewery the logo of a red and white ball, a reference to their love of billiards.

The beer was mostly sold in Amsterdam until the rail network expanded and allowed for easier shipping beyond the city borders. Quickly, however, the production began expanding, and by 1883 the beer was being shipped to Great Britain and the Dutch East Indies. The beer would not make it to the United States until 1933, when prohibition ended.

In 1891, the company became a publicly traded entity, and was competing quite heavily with Heineken. The two rivals teamed up in 1941, however, to purchase the Van Vollenhoven’s Bierbrouwerij, which they operated as a joint venture. That brewery closed, however, in 1961.

But the two remaining Amsterdam brewers weren’t done collaborating. In 1968, Amstel was bought by Heineken, who still owns the brand to this day. The company introduced Amstel Light in 1980, which is now the brand’s lead beer. Amstel is now the 7th biggest beer brand in the world by volume, and it can be found in over 100 countries around the world.
