Smuttynose Brewing was created in 1994 in the city of Hampton, New Hampshire, by brother and sister Peter and Janet Egelston, along with Paul Sylva and Jim Beauvais, founders of Ipswich Brewery. The Egelstons, who had previously founded Northampton Brewery and Portsmouth Brewery, quickly bought out their partners and ran the company for more than two decades. For years, the Egelstons tried to build a new facility to brew in, but an initial deal fell through and a later plan to build a brewery faced community backlash. Finally, in 2014 the brewery was moved to a larger facility on a 17-acre historic farm called Towle Farm.

Smuttynose began facing serious financial trouble in 2018, and were forced to sell the brewery at a bank auction. The winner was their lender Provident Bank, who bid $8.25 million for the property and brand assets. Just one week later, they sold the company to Runnymede Investments, a private equity firm run by Jake and Chris Broom, Jason Frechette, and Andrew Hart. The firm began using the name Finestkind Brewing LLC, based off of Smuttynose’s Finestkind IPA, as the holding company for Smuttynose. Finestkind later began a vodka cocktail brand called Island District, and purchased Five Boroughs Brewery in 2023 to add to the portfolio.
