Carta Blanca Beer was created by Cuauhtémoc Brewery in 1890 in Monterrey, Mexico. It was the first beer brewed by Cuauhtémoc, which had recently been started by businesspeople Isaac Garza, Doña Francisca Muguerza Crespo, and her brother José A. Muguerza Crespo. The company took advantage of a recent decree by Monterrey governor Bernardo Reyes that made all new industrial operations tax exempt for 20 years. Shortly after launching the beer, Cuauhtémoc achieved critical acclaim with first prizes at the 1893 Chicago World Fair (the same exhibition where Pabst claimed their famous “Blue Ribbon”).
For years, Carta Blanca – which takes its name from the French phrase carte blanche, or “clean slate” – was packaged with a cork stopper and cage, similar to French champagne. Carta Blanca was positioned as a premium beer, and is now one of the oldest beer brands in Mexico.
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the company’s brands became more and more popular, and Cuauhtémoc grew in size. It eventually purchased its rival Cervecería Central in 1929, and the company started adding glass production facilities to its portfolio as well. In 1954, they purchased Tecate beer, significantly increasing their overall production per year.
In 1985, Cuauhtémoc purchased Moctezuma Brewery, and became Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, one of the largest breweries in Mexico. In 2010, the brewery became a subsidiary of Heineken N.V., a Dutch multinational brewing company. The deal was valued at about $5.5 billion in an all-shares transaction, and solidified Heineken as the world’s number two producer of beer by sales, behind the Belgian brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev.
Since the acquisition by Heineken, Carta Blanca has fallen from its premier status within the company’s portfolio, in favor of their other Mexican beers like Dos Equis. However, it still has a loyal following among fans, both within Mexico and beyond.
