August Schell Brewing Company is a beer brand that was founded in 1860 in New Ulm, Minnesota by August Schell, a German machinist, and Jacob Bernhardt, a brewer. When Schell moved to New Ulm, he built a mill, but noting the large German population in the area and the demand for German beer, he teamed up with Bernhardt to start a brewery. In 1866, Schell bought out Bernhardt’s share of the enterprise, and the brewery has remained in the Schell family ever since, first passing to his wife, and then his son, and then his son-in-law George Marti. The brewery is currently operated by Jace Marti, August Schell’s great-great-great-grandson. In 2002, the brewery purchased Grain Belt Brewing, the other historic brewery in Minnesota, making them the largest and oldest brewery in the state.
