Baltika Brewery was created in 1990 in St. Petersburg, Russia, during the time when the region was part of the Soviet Union, by Naif Achakzai and Nikita Kefirov. While the business was state-owned at its outset, in 1992 it was privatized. In 2008, the brewery was purchased by Carlsberg Group. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Carlsberg announced it was selling its Russian assets, including Baltika. However, in 2023 the Russian government seized the Carlsberg assets, citing rules allowing it to take the property from companies in “unfriendly” countries.
