Bintang Beer was first brewed in Medan, Indonesia in 1929 by Nederlandsch-Indische Bierbrouwerijen, a company set up by Heineken. It was modeled as a localized version of Heineken, with similar branding and packaging. When Indonesia achieved independence in 1949, the brewery was renamed ‘Heineken’s Indonesian Brewery Company’. Eight years later the company was nationalized, but Heineken regained control in 1967. Today, it is Indonesia’s most popular beer.
