Duclaw Brewing Company was created in 1996 in Bel Air, Maryland by Dave Benfield. He started homebrewing as a hobby in junior year of college, and after spending a short time with his father’s electrical contractor business he decided to pursue his passion. Benfield says he was expected to follow his father in the family business, but after spending all of his free time homebrewing, he knew he had to start a brewery.

The brewery achieved success early on, eventually distributing to 23 states, including as far as Colorado and Texas in the United States, as well as in Canada and France abroad.

In 2023, the business was acquired by New Jersey-based River Horse Brewing, which in 2007 was purchased by Glenn Bernabeo and Chris Walsh under the holding company RHB Acquisition LLC. The deal allowed production of Duclaw to move to River Horse‘s Ewing, New Jersey facility, while new products, strategy, and sales would stay managed by Benfield. Duclaw’s brewery in Benfield was dismantled and auctioned off.
