Dust Bowl Brewing was created in the year 2009 in Turlock, California by Brett Tate. Tate’s grandparents were “Okies” who had migrated from Oklahoma to California during the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. In 2006, he read an article in the local paper about Don Oliver, a local homebrewer who had just won the Samuel Adams Longshot Competition. The two teamed up and Dust Bowl Brewing was born.

In 2010, they added to the partnership Brett Honoré, who helped open their taproom in Downtown Turlock the following year. A larger 30,000 square foot production facility was added in 2016, which also had a taproom of its own. The original taproom was closed in 2020 to consolidate operations, but the company now also has outposts in Monterey, which opened in 2019, Elk Grove, which opened in 2021, and Livermore, which opened in 2023.
