Faxe Brewery was founded in 1901 in the town of Faxe (also known as Fakse), Denmark by the husband and wife Nikoline and Conrad Nielsen. Nikoline had been a proficient brewer ever since she was a child, when she helped her father with his brewing business. The brewery she and Conrad founded was originally known as Fakse Dampbryggeri (“steam brewery”), but after Conrad died in 1914, Nikoline renamed it Faxe Bryggeri. The popularity of the beer increased in the 1930s, when a local drought forced the company to dig a new well much deeper than before. The mineral content of this water proved quite good for brewing beer, and their sales improved as they gained a competitive advantage.

In 1945, Nikoline Nielsen retired, and the couple’s three sons (Helmer, Carl Wilhelm, and Erik) took over the company. Nikoline died in 1951, and all three sons died in short succession thereafter. Nikoline’s grandson Bent Bryde-Nielsen became the president in 1960. In 1989, Faxe merged with Jyske Bryggerier (which owned the brands Ceres and Thor) to become Bryggerigruppen. That company was later renamed to Royal Unibrew in 2005. The company is now the second largest Danish brewing company, behind Carlsberg Brewery. It has about a 25% market share within the country. It makes about 11 million hectolitres of beer a year, uses about 4 million cubic meters of natural gas per year, and is publicly listed on the Nasdaq Nordic stock exchange in Copenhagen.

The company also makes a soft drink under the Faxe name, known as Faxe Kondi. Marketed as a sports drink, it is one of the most popular soft drinks in Denmark.
