Carlsberg Beer was created in the year 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was renamed Gamle Carlsberg (“Old Carlsberg”) after Jacobson’s son opened a brewery and called it Ny (or “New”) Carlsberg. However, the two breweries eventually merged in 1906 and the name was reverted. The first license to brew Carlsberg by a separate company was granted in 1969 to Photos Photiades group in 1969.
In 1970, Carlsberg merged with fellow Danish brewery Tuborg to become United Breweries AS. In 1992 it merged with Tetley to become Carlsberg-Tetley, and then later Carlsberg Group. In China, Carlsberg beer is produced by Tsingtao, after Carlsberg sold its business to them in the region in 2008. Similarly, Carlsberg has been produced by Delta Djakarta (owned by San Miguel Corporation) in Indonesia. In Israel, the beer has been produced by Israel Beer Breweries since 1992.
Today, Carlsberg’s main owner (Carlsberg Group) is now the fourth largest brewery in the world, behind Anheuser-Busch InBev, Heineken, and Snow.
