Gösser Beer was founded in 1860 in Göss, Austria by Max Kober, a Polish brewer who previously had worked at Żywiec Brewery. In 1977, the brewery was purchased by Steirerbrau Group, which merged with Brau-Beteiligungs-AG in 1991 to become Brau Union Austria. In 2003, Heineken purchased a majority stake in Brau Union and begun managing the brand.
