Hudepohl Beer was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1885 by Ludwig Hudepohl II. After surviving prohibition, it became the dominant beer in Cincinnati in the 1930’s. In 1986, Hudepohl was sold to Schoenling Brewing Company, which rebranded as Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing. In 1997, the brewery was sold to the Boston Beer Company, which continued to brew the beer under contract for Hudepohl-Schoenling. However two years later, the company exited the beer business and sold its alcoholic brands to Crooked River Brewing.

They continued to brew the beer out of state in Maryland until 2004, when Greg Hardman purchased the company’s Christian Moerlein brand and reestablished production in Cincinnati. He also established a first right of refusal on all other brands, and acquired those in 2006. Hardman held the company until 2020, when he sold all brands to a new investment group led by Jay Woffington. The company was renamed Cincinnati Beverage Company, and two years later it was sold to investor John Richardson.
