Kulmbacher Brewery was founded in Kulmbach, Germany in 1846 by Johann W. Reichel, Johann K. Scheiding, and Johann M. Hübner. It was originally known as Reichelbräu, and became a joint stock company in 1895. In 1986, holding company Schörghuber Gruppe purchased a 49.9% stake in the business. That company also owns a majority stake in Paulaner Group, which Heineken is a minority partner in. By 2021, Paulaner Group owned 63.8% of Kulmbacher, meaning Schörghuber Gruppe is now the majority owner.
