Left Hand Brewing was created in 1993 in the city of Longmont, Colorado by Dick Doore and Eric Wallace. Doore received a homebrewing kit from his brother for Christmas three years prior. Wallace and Doore originally incorporated the business as Indian Peaks Brewing Company, but shortly after opening they changed the name to Left Hand when they discovered the name Indian Peaks was already in use by another brewery. “Left Hand” is a reference to Arapahoe Chief Niwot, whose name means Left Hand in the Arapahoe language.

The company’s Milk Stout has become one of the most popular milk stouts in the country. In 2011, it was introduced in a bottle as the first American and first craft nitrogenated beer without a widget.

In 1998, they merged with Tabernash Brewing and took over the production capacity, doubling their overall size. In 2015, the company became majority employee-owned when Wallace and Doore sold 54% of the company to an employee trust, owned by the over 100 employees of the brewery.
