Palm Breeze Sparkling Alcohol Spritz was created by Mark Anthony Brands in 2008. It was first launched in Canada under the name “Palm Bay Spritz,” and quickly became the country’s top selling ready to drink canned cocktail. That same year, Mark Anthony sold the Canadian rights to the brand, along with other products in their portfolio, to Labatt, the Canadian division of Anheuser-Busch InBev. As a result, the company altered the name of the product in the United States to “Palm Breeze Spritz” to avoid confusion.
The beverage used a neutral malt base, and was targeted towards female consumers of flavored malt beverages, as well as millennials, in contrast to the company’s more masculine leaning Mike’s Hard Lemonade. Flavored malt beverages had become increasingly popular in the early 2000s, partly due to technical improvements in the use of neutral malt base which made them more palatable, and partly due to an increase in the portfolios of alcohol companies beyond traditional beer products. Palm Breeze came in four flavors, and was available in 12oz cans. It ranged between 3.2% and 4.5% alcohol by volume depending on the market in which it was being sold.
In the face of increasing competition, Palm Breeze failed to catch on in the US Market. It first launched in Rhode Island, but did not meet much critical success. The brand also faced internal competition from White Claw Hard Seltzer, which was quickly growing in popularity and attracted much of the market share that Palm Breeze was attempting to corner. The product was discontinued in the United States in 2020, though Palm Bay Spritz is still available for sale in Canada.
