Palmetto Brewing Company was created in 1993 in Charleston, South Carolina by Ed Falkenstein and Louis Bruce. The two were windsurfing buddies who were inspired by the small batch production at Full Sail Brewery. They ran the brewery together until 2011, when Bruce retired. Falkenstein followed in 2016, passing the brewery off to distribution partner Larry Lipov. In late 2017, Lipov sold Palmetto Brewing to Catawba Brewing, based out of South Carolina. Catawba was purchased, along with the Palmetto Brand, by Made By the Water in 2021.
