Stella Artois is a well-known beer brand that was created in 1926 in Leuven, Belgium by Brouwerij Artois. Brouwerij Artois had roots going back to the year 1366, when Den Hoorn opened up as a pub that brewed its own beer (with the sign of a horn as its logo, a variant of which is still used today). In 1708, the Sébastien Artois took over as the head brewer at the business, and nine years later he purchased the company, renaming it after himself.
The brewery only brewed top fermented ale until 1892, when it began brewing bottom fermented lager, which was rapidly becoming more popular. In 1926, Stella Artois was created as a special Christmas beer (named after the Star of Bethlehem, which in the Christmas story guided the three wise men to Jesus’ birth). The beer quickly became available year round, however, and by the 1930s was being exported throughout Europe. By the 1960s, Stella Artois had become the market leader in Belgium.
In 1988, the Flemish Brouwerij Artois joined with the Walloon based Piedboeuf Brewery in Jupille, Belgium to form Interbrew. The company quickly expanded under the shared ownership, and began taking over breweries across the world. The first was Canadian brewery Labatt, in a deal which also included their majority ownership stake in the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team until they sold it in 2000. This deal was followed shortly by another for Bass Brewery in the United Kingdom. In 2004, Interbrew merged with Brazilian brewer AmBev to become InBev. In 2008, InBev acquired Anheuser-Busch in the United States, forming Anheuser-Busch InBev.
