Straffe Hendrik beer was introduced by De Halve Maan in Bruges, Belgium in 1981. In 1988, the brand was sold to Brouwerij RIVA in Dentergem, Belgium. That brewery purchased Liefmans Brewery in 1990, and the organization was renamed to Liefmans Breweries in 2005. However, in 2007, the company declared bankruptcy, and its assets were acquired by Duvel Moortgat. Soon thereafter, De Halve Maan repurchased the Straffe Hendrick assets.
