Strongbow Cider was created in the year 1960 in the city of Hereford, England by the H. P. Bulmer cider company. The company named the cider after Richard de Clare, a nobleman from the 12th century who led the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland, for which he received the nickname “Strongbow.” The cider was marketed as a masculine alternative to other ciders, with the slogan “the strong cider for men.” Despite the motto, Strongbow currently comes in betwen 4.5% and 5% alcohol by volume, which places it at a standard strength amongst other ciders.
The cider quickly took on popularity, and within ten years it had become the second most popular cider in the world, behind H. P. Bulmer’s other brand, Woodpecker. It has particular popularity in England and Wales, where it is frequently in the top ten draft beverages by sales volume.
In 2003, the brand was acquired by the Scottish beverage company, Scottish & Newcastle. In 2008, Scottish & Newcastle was purchased by Heineken and Carlsberg in a joint venture, and their operations were split, with Heineken getting the Strongbow business. The rights to the brand had previously been granted to Sleeman Breweries in Canada and the United States in 2001, but Heineken purchased those rights in 2012.
In 1970, H. P. Bulmer introduced Strongbow in Australia, where it is still the most popular cider. in 2003, the territorial rights to the brand were purchased by Foster’s Group. In 2011, Foster’s was purchased by SABMiller, and when they were purcahsed by Anhuser-Busch InBev in 2016, the brand was divested to Asahi. They held the brand until 2020, when it was finally sold back to Heineken, uniting the ownership across the world.
