Three Horses Beer (commonly known as THB) was first brewed in 1958 in Antananarivo, Madagascar by Société Tananarivienne d’Articles Réfrigérés (STAR). The company had been set up 5 years earlier by French company Rochefortaise as the local Coca-Cola bottler, and they had recently begun research to establish a local beer. By 1968, the company had set up a brewery for its production in Antsiranana. The Madagascar government took over partial control of the brewery in 1980, and in 1989 Rochefortaise sold their stake to Groupe Fraise, which regained control of the nationalized stake a year later. In 2011, Groupe Fraise sold the business to French brewing group Groupe Castel.
