Quebec, Canada
Unibroue was founded in 1990 in Chambly, Quebec by André Dion and Serge Racine. The idea was to unite the breweries in the province to help encourage distribution, but the team failed to earn support from many of the other breweries. At the same time, Dion and Racine purchased 75% of La Brasserie Massawippi Inc., and the following year purchased the remaining 25% and renamed the brewery Brasserie Broubec Inc. The next year, Broubec officially merged with Unibroue.
Unibroue achieved some renown for its focus on making Belgian style beers. La Fin du Monde, a Belgian tripel, premiered in 1994 and quickly became an international export, while Blanche Du Chambly became the company’s flagship as a Belgian white ale.
In 1997, the company went public, and issued 2.1 million shares. The shares eventually achieved a high of $5.10 in 2004, shortly before the company was purchased by Sleeman Breweries Limited for $5.25 a share, in a deal that was valued at $36.5 million Canadian. Dion and Racine, who still owned 71% of the company, quickly accepted the deal. Sleeman’s control of the brewery was shortlived, however, as it itself was purchased by Japanese brewing conglomerate Sapporo in 2006 for $400 million Canadian.
