What does BACKPOCKET BREWING Own?
Backpocket Brewing was founded in 2012 in McGregor, Iowa by Jacob Simmons and Dave and Marci Strutt. The Strutts had owned Old Man River Brewpub, where Simmons was head brewer. Simons had previously been a Ph.D. candidate in microbiology, but wanted to pursue a career with more tangibility, so he switched to brewing.
After the three discussed wanting to pursue a brewery business that was more focused on distribution than taproom beer sales, they experimented with beer for distribution, first under the name of Einfach Brewing. Eventully, they set up the Backpocket brewery in Coralville, Iowa. The Strutts later sold Old Man River Brewery in 2018, to Duane and Diana Vorwald, opting to focus their efforts on the opportunities with Backpocket.
In 2024, Backpocket joined with Singlespeed Brewing in a shared-service agreement they called Parallel Brewing Collective. However, both breweries retain separate ownership and control. That same year, the brewery purchased Peace Tree Brewing, which had recently shuttered.
