Kirin Brewery was founded in 1885 in Yokohama, Japan as the Japan Brewery Company by William Henry Talbot and Edgar Abbott. They first began marketing the beer Kirin in 1888, and in 1907 the company reorganized as Kirin Brewery Company. In the 21st century, Kirin spread its company’s interests across the globe. In 2006, Kirin purchased 25% of Hangzhou Qiandaohu Beer Co., Ltd. for $38 million. In 2009 it purchased Lion in Australia and 48% of Philippines based San Miguel Brewery. In 2011 it purchased Brazilian based Schincariol, which it later sold to Heineken in 2017. It also owns New Belgium Brewing and Bell’s in the United States.
