Talking Cedar Brewing & Distilling was founded in Rochester, Washington in 2020 by Chehalis Tribal Enterprises, the business wing of the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation. David Burnett, CEO of CTE, proposed the brewery and distillery as a way of building off of the success of their Great Wolf Lodge and Lucky Eagle Casino. However, soon after developing the plan they discovered an 1834 law that prevented the creation of distilleries on tribal law. They worked with federal legislators to change the law, which passed in 2018. The team partnered with Heritage Distilling on the project, as well as with Stillwater Artisanal Ales on the beer side of things. All profits go back to the tribe.
