Cerveza Victoria, also known as Victoria Malaga, was founded in the El Perchel neighborhood of Málaga, Spain in 1928 by Luis Franquelo Carrasco. The brewery’s name comes from the Festival of the Virgin of Victory, which occurred on September 8th, 1928, the date of the founding of the brewery. Carrasco quickly hired German brewer Henrich Dietz to lead operations at the brewery, and the company began distributing its beer to Andalusia and nearby Morocco. Soon the brewery was producing over fifteen thousand liters of beer a day with a staff of over 85 employees on hand.
The brewery was severely damaged during the Spanish Civil War, and had to close temporarily. However by 1937, it was up and running again. In the years that followed, the brand thrived, and soon became a household name, in part due to its iconic image of a German tourist being refreshed by Victoria beer.
Victoria moved to a larger facility in 1968, but quickly found that they could not meet the production outputs that they had anticipated. Due to restrictions by the Ministry of Industry, the brewery was required to meet a minimum production capacity, which it struggled to do. By 1970, the production was dwindling, and in 1972 the company was sold to Cervezas Santander.
Santander sold Victoria to Cruzcampo in 1990, and in 1991, Guinness purchased 89% of Cruzcampo for 98 billion pesetas.
In 1999, Heineken sought to purchase Cruzcampo, but was instructed by the national Competition Court to divest itself of some of its assets to make the deal. As a result, Estrella de Levante, along with Estrella de Levante were then sold to S.A. Damm.
