Long Trail Brewing was created in 1989 in the city of Bridgewater, Vermont by Andy Pherson. It was originally known as Mountain Brewers, and was based out of the basement of the Bridgewater Woolen Mill. The company relocated in 1995 to a larger 17,000 square feet facility in Bridgewater Corners, and changed its name to Long Trail Brewing. The name came from one of their beers, and was how they were informally known for several years prior to the switch.

In 2006, Long Trail was purchased by the private equity firm Fulham and Co., led by investor Daniel Fulham. Fulham expanded the brewery significantly, producing 140,000 barrels by 2013. The company purchased Otter Creek Brewery in 2010, which was previously owned by Wolaver’s Fine Organic Ales. The following year the company bought the brand rights for The Shed Brewery, which had recently lost its lease. All of the brands then were rolled up into Long Trail’s organization.

In 2022, Fulham and Co sold Long Trail to Mass. Bay Brewing Company (owners of Harpoon Brewery). Mass. Bay participates in an employee stock ownership plan, meaning Long Trail is now owned by its employees.
