Origin

France, Europe

Brasserie Mutzig was first established in 1810 in the quaint town of Mutzig, France, by the visionary brewer Antoine Wagner. Nestled in the picturesque region of Alsace, Mutzig was an ideal location for brewing, with its rich brewing tradition and access to pristine water sources. Antoine’s passion and dedication to crafting high-quality beer quickly earned Brasserie Mutzig a loyal following.

In 1844, Antoine’s son, Jerome Wagner, took the reins of the brewery. Under Jerome’s leadership, the brewery began a significant expansion. Jerome recognized the potential for growth and worked tirelessly to increase production and distribution. His efforts paid off, as Brasserie Mutzig grew from a small local operation to a well-known brewery in the region.

The mantle was then passed to Jerome’s son, Camille Wagner, in 1887. This period marked a transformative era for the brewing industry, largely due to Louis Pasteur’s groundbreaking research into lager yeast. Camille was quick to adopt these scientific advancements, modernizing the brewery’s processes and beginning to pasteurize their beer. This innovation not only extended the shelf life of their product but also ensured consistent quality, solidifying Brasserie Mutzig’s reputation for excellence.

In 1932, the brewery saw another generational transition as Camille’s son, Hieronymous Wagner, took over the business. Hieronymous had a vision to expand Brasserie Mutzig’s reach beyond Europe. He embarked on an ambitious journey to distribute their beer to Africa, targeting markets in Madagascar, Senegal, the Antilles, and the Ivory Coast. This strategic expansion introduced Mutzig to a whole new audience and laid the groundwork for its international presence.

The year 1969 marked a significant milestone for Brasserie Mutzig as it merged with Alsacienne de Brasserie. This merger strengthened the company’s position in the market, paving the way for its acquisition by Heineken three years later. The acquisition by Heineken brought significant changes, including the decision to germanicize the beer’s name by adding an umlaut, reflecting the beer’s historical connection to German brewing traditions. This change also provided legal protection, since only beer brewed in the city of Mutzig could be labeled “Mutzig.”

In 1987, Heineken launched a Mützig brewery in Africa, which quickly gained popularity, particularly in Rwanda. Today, Mützig is brewed by Heineken subsidiaries across various African countries, except in Cameroon, where it is brewed under license by Brasseries du Cameroun, a subsidiary of Castel. This strategic move helped solidify Mützig’s presence and popularity in the African market.

Despite the closure of the original Mutzig brewery in 1989, the brand continues to thrive, produced at Heineken’s other facilities. The legacy of Brasserie Mutzig, with its rich history and commitment to quality, lives on through each bottle of Mützig, cherished by beer enthusiasts around the world.
