Parrot Bay Cocktails are a brand of flavored malt beverage produced by Sazerac Company since 2021. They are an offshoot of the Parrot Bay flavored rum brand that was previously owned by Diageo, and then sold to Sazerac in 2018.

Parrot Bay Rum was introduced in 1999 by Seagram as an extension of their Captain Morgan brand. The brand was originally coconut flavored white rum, but has since expanded to other tropical fruits. Both the Parrot Bay trademark and the Captain Morgan trademark were sold by Seagram to British beer and spirits company Diageo in 2001. In 2018, Diageo sold Parrot Bay to Sazerac, but kept the Captain Morgan brand, one of the most popular rum brands in the world.

Soon after acquiring the Parrot Bay brand, Sazerac began making malt based version of the rum for sale in convenience stores. Since many states don’t allow the sale of hard alcohol in certain store types, the move allowed the brand to expand into more spaces. Sazerac made a similar move with their Fireball brand, which used the statement of ingredients “Malt Beverage With Natural Whisky & Other Flavors and Caramel Color.” In fact, that beverage used “whisky flavors,” not whisky itself, which the wording of the label leaves ambiguous.

Similarly, Parrot Bay’s label uses the statement “Malt beverage with natural flavors,” while the spirits based version of the beverage uses the term “Caribbean rum with natural flavors.” The later has versions that are 21% and 45% alcohol, while the malt based version is only 16%. Sazerac has faced class action lawsuits over the allegedly deceptive labeling of both products. Both cases are still pending before federal court.
