Prestige beer was created by Brasserie Nationale d’Haïti (BRANA) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti by Michael Madsen in 1976. Madsen had been born to a wealthy industrialist family, and was one of the richest men in Haiti at the time. He started the brewery three years prior, and soon after releasing Prestige the company made a deal to license Heineken lager and Guinness Stout from their respective owners for sale within the Haitian Market. Both companies acquired a stake in the company, with Heineken taking a larger share of 22.5%. In 2011, Heineken expanded that share, and gained a controlling interest of 95%, with the remaining 5% being owned by Diageo, the owner of the Guinness brand.
The company had faced criticism under the ownership of Michael Madsen, who was often attacked by critics for not adequately paying his workers. Shortly before the acquisition by Heineken, Madsen died of a heart attack at the age of 65 while hosting friends at his home.
Prestige beer is a light lager, with an alcohol by volume of 5.6%. In the year 2000, the beer won the Gold Medal at the World Beer Cup in San Diego, California in the American Style Lager category. The brand won the same award again in 2012. In 2005, the company began exporting the beer to elsewhere in the caribbean, including Turks and Caicos, as well as within the United States. Prestige Beer has a loyal following in Miami and other regions with a large Haitian population.
BRANA also produces a soft drink derived from malt called Malta H (originally Malta Heineken), as well as the energy drink Toro and a cola available in a variety of flavors called King Cola.
