Sagres is a Portuguese beer brand that was created in 1940 in the city of Vialonga, Portugal by Sociedade Central de Cervejas. The company was created 6 years prior from the merger of Companhia Produtora de Malte e Cerveja Portugália, Companhia de Cervejas Estrela, Companhia de Cervejas Coimbra and Companhia da Fábrica de Cerveja Jansen. Sagres was created to showcase the company’s capabilities at the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition. It is named after the town of Sagres, which is the most southwestern city in Europe, and a home to navigators for centuries.

Sagres quickly began to be exported, first to Gibraltar, and then later to the Azores, Angola, and the Cape Verde archipelago. It can now be found in most communities where there is a large Portuguese population, and has a small but loyal following within the United States. The beer is also the official sponsor of the Portuguese national soccer team.

In 1977, Sociedade Central de Cervejas merged with Cergal – Cervejas de Portugal to became Centralcer – Central de Cervejas. At first, the operation was publicly traded, but it was taken private in 1990. The Bavaria Group, a Colombian brewery and the second largest in South America, purchased a major stake and became one of its largest shareholders. But by 2000, British brewing conglomerate Scottish & Newcastle had a 49% share in the enterprise, and in 2003 they assumed total control. In 2007, rival European breweries Carlsberg & Heineken formed a consortium to purchase Scottish & Newcastle, and split up its assets afterwards. Sagres went to Heineken when the deal closed in 2008.
